We're super excited to announce Simon Drew of Loud and Flashy photography, Ashington, Northumberland
has won this prestigious award!

The North East Photographer of the Year 2018 had some absolutely amazing entries throughout 2018. Having won the opening round in January 2018 we were then entered in to the final in January 2019 where we had to show just 5 photographs - all taken in the north east. It was a tough choice to pick them, trying to show a wide range of styles, creativity and technical excellence!

We were up against amazing competition from the other finalists and we really don't envy the judges who had to make the final decision!

Winning this award means so much, firstly because of the immense talent that we were up against - the north east has so many amazing photographers. Secondly, this competition was judged by our peers in the photography industry, so to receive such an accolade from such amazingly talented people makes it even more precious to us!

Great start to 2018!

Well I'm very pleased to announce I've won the January round of The North East Photographer Of The Year 2018!

The winning image below was shot in the studio for the Eliot Smith Company, a Newcastle based dance company, to promote their work 'Imprisonment'.

It was actually quite a hard shot to make as we couldn't make too many attempts as the dancer falling would injure himself.

Also getting the lighting in exactly the right place to light all the dancers while not lighting the white walls and floor too much took a bit of work!

Fortunately working with professional dancers did make things a little easier.

The dance company were very pleased with the final image, as am I, so I'm glad it's been recognised in the competition and voted for by my peers and other clients.

If you'd like some creative, commercial photography get in touch, you're worth it!

New Website!

We've become mobile friendly!

Our previous website was designed in 2010 when believe it or not, people still used computers to browse websites!

It was something we should have done sooner, but trying to fit the massive amount of information from the old site on to a new mobile friendly layout was a daunting task.

But hopefully we've got it right?

You can still find information you need about our services along with pricing details and our latest special offers.

And of course we still have a gallery of some of our favourite pictures shot in the studio.

Please do take a look at it and let us know if there's anything you think we should change.

Make sure you also say 'hi' when you're there and you could win a photoshoot and large print!

How Can Family Photography, Specifically Family Portraits, Help Boost A Child’s Self-Esteem?

Children whose parents display family photographs in the home grow up with greater confidence and sense of belonging, it has been revealed.

David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit. A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.

Professor Geoff Beattie, Head of School and Dean of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester says “We cannot underestimate the power of photographs to keep us feeling linked to others and belonging. They cement us into our networks. For children in particular, looking at photographs is part of the socialising process; learning who you are and where you fit into the family. By displaying photographs of our children at different stages of their lives, we are making a very public statement that we are proud of them. When children grow up surrounded by photographs, it gives them a richer understanding of where they come from, which helps with confidence”.

When It Comes To Having The Greatest Positive Impact For Your Child, Which is Better, Digital Images or Paper Prints?
Obviously, rather than print and display family photographs, families are increasingly enjoying their images in a digital form, be it a mobile device, a laptop, or simply on social media. But does an image on a tablet, computer screen or social media site have the same impact for helping families boost a child’s self-esteem?
My bias is very simple. I think family photographs should be on the wall,” says Krauss.
“I am very conservative about self-esteem and I think placing a family photo someplace in the home where the child can see it every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child this sense of reassurance and comfort. They have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It lets them know where they are in the pecking order and that they are loved and cared for,” says Krauss.
Additionally, Krauss recommends having photographs of that child with their family placed in the child’s bedroom, so it can be among the last things they see before sleep and the first thing they may see before beginning their day.
It says we love you and care about you. You’re important.

Our Guide Dog Amber.

If you've visited the studio this year you may have met our Guide Dog Puppy Amber.

She's been with us since January for her basic training and socialising and last week celebrated her 1st birthday, so we had a little photoshoot with her and her best friend, Willow, who is just 13 weeks old.

She really is the most perfect dog you could ever meet, with the best temperament - totally soppy and affectionate!

She'll be leaving us in February 2017 to go to her advanced training and we'll be so sad to see her go, but also so proud knowing she's going to radically improve someone's quality of life, giving them more freedom.
